With very good friends in the USA and a grandfather, Frederick Lee Thomas, who was born in West Texas in the late 1870s, there is a pull and reason to visit.
Very much against the tide of immigration, my grandfather left the Texas border country to head north and east, eventually making a home in Glasgow and a living as a travelling salesman.
Here are two vignettes from a visit to Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, when I discovered we really were trailer trash and started to understand my own sense of rootlessness.
